Overview

During the 2025 federal government shutdown, IKEA stepped forward to support furloughed government employees and contractors across the DMV. Beginning October 17, the College Park (MD) and Woodbridge (VA) stores offered complimentary hot breakfast every morning until the shutdown ended. The initiative provided comfort, dignity, and community connection during a financially stressful period.

Challenge

The shutdown left thousands of federal workers without pay, creating immediate financial strain. IKEA recognized the need for a simple, meaningful gesture that could support local families while reinforcing the brand’s long-standing commitment to the DMV region.

Solution

IKEA launched a free daily breakfast program for furloughed workers. Guests simply presented a valid government or contractor ID and enrolled in the IKEA Family loyalty program. The meal included eggs, bacon, and potatoes — a warm, reliable option during a difficult time.

Impact
